Documentation of Indigenous Irular Tribal Knowledge in the Eastern Ghats region of Krishnagiri District, India

Abtract

 

Ethnobotanical plant survey was conducted to gather the data about therapeutic plants used by the ethinic individuals of the study area. The exploration of ethnomedicinal survey of 65 plant species belonging to 63 genera of 37 families practiced by the Irular tribe of Krishnagiri district, Eastern Ghats, India were documented. The traditional knowledge of people including reliable ethno medicinal expertise in the native plants used for the preparation of drugs and administration were documented. The collection was done through questionnaire as well as informal personal interviews during the field trips in the study area totaling 75 days during 2007 - 2013. The archived therapeutic plants were for the most part used to cure skin ailments, Jaundice, diabetes, wounds and sexual disorders. The restorative plants utilized by the general population are organized sequentially, and took after by their plant name, family name, nearby name(s), part(s) utilized, method of arrangement and their relating maladies were documented. The conservation of the medicinal practices as well as the plants are needed so as to use for the betterment of the future. Keywords: Ethno-medicinal plants, Irular tribal, Eastern Ghats
