Chemical Characteristics of Some Underutilized Leafy Vegetables

H. O. Edeoga, G. Omosun, M. U. Nduche, and A. A. Markson

Abstract

The chemical and nutrient composition of six neglected leafy vegetables; Cnidoscolus aconitifolius (Miller) I. M. Johnson, Crassocephalum crepidiodes (Benth) S. Moore, Diplazium sammatii (Kuhn) C. Chr., Laportea ovalfolia (Schumach.) Chew, Lippia multiflora Moldenke, and Tetrogonia expansa Murr. were investigated. Cnidoscolus aconitifolius contained the highest alkaloid (4.39 ± 0.03%) whereas Tetragonia expansa contained the least (0.25 ± 0.03%). Averagely the phytochemical content ranges from 0.69 ± 0.03% to 4.39 ±0.03% for alkaloids, 0.79 ± 0.02% to 4.07 ± 0.2% for saponins, 0.93 ± 0.1% to 3.07 ± 0.1% for flavonoids, 0.46 ± 0.0001% to 0.19 ± 0.0001% for Tannins, 0.24 ± 0.002% to 0.11 ± 0.001% for phenol, 6.64 ± 0.1% to 13.69 ± 0.03% for HCN and 0.09 ± 0.01% to 0.1 ± 0.01% for oxalates. The mineral and vitamin contents were also investigated and it was realized that Cnidoscolus aconitifolus and Tetragonia expansa were quite high in vitamin C. The results show that the vegetables have potential nutritional value and can also be used as raw material in the pharmaceuticals.

Immunostumilant activity of Drynaria quercifolia rhizome extract and histopathological analysis of Vibrio harveyi infection of Macrobrachium rosenbergii

M. Maridass and G.Raju

Abstract

In the present study, we evaluated in the growth parameters of the basal diet incorporated into Drynaria quercifolia rhizome extract fed with Vibrio harveyi infected prawn Macrobrachium rosenbergii post larvae. In the results of control diet incorporated into 4% D. quercifolia observed that the best growth performance in weight gains, specific growth rate (SGR) and feed conversion ratio (FCR). In the present study, Vibrio harveyi infected prawn M. rosenbergii observed by THC and DHC increasing counts in experimental diets treated groups compared than control group. The conclusion of the present study, experimental diets of D. quercifolia rhizome extracts is the best feed, growth enhanced and immunostumilant activity for V. harveyi infected prawn M. rosenbergii and also it is best suitable feed for M. rosenbergii.
